Lomir redn yidish, let's speak Yiddish! This beginner Yiddish course is designed for students with little or no prior Yiddish who want to learn to speak, read, and write the language. Using the In Eynem textbook alongside authentic Yiddish songs, games, and media, you'll build a practical foundation in Yiddish conversation, vocabulary, grammar, and culture. You'll learn the Yiddish alphabet (alef-beys) in both print and cursive, introduce yourself and others, make everyday small talk, and describe your daily routine, all while exploring Yiddish culture past and present.

About the Instructor

Sara Feldman

Sara Feldman has taught Yiddish at Harvard University and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She holds an M.A. in Judaic Studies and a Ph.D. in Near Eastern Studies from the University of Michigan, where she was also a postdoctoral fellow at the Frankel Institute. Her scholarship focuses on the interplay of Yiddish, Russian, and Hebrew in modern Jewish culture, with broader interests in multilingualism, translation, queer and gender studies, migration, and contemporary Jewish culture. She is co-editor of Black, Jewish, and Beautiful: Contemporary Blewish Voices (Syracuse University Press, 2026).
Feldman practices a communicative approach to language teaching that cultivates not only literacy but fluency in spoken Yiddish, treating it as a living language and culture. Her courses explore Yiddish culture old and new, traditional and radical, and invite students to contribute to it through projects such as Undzer Mishpokhe: A Queer Yiddish Curriculum Supplement.
