Dan Fendel has been involved in the mitzvot of bikkur cholim (visiting the sick) and nichum aveilim (comforting mourners) for nearly 40 years. He volunteered with the ShantiProject and its East Bay offshoot Namaste from 1985 through 2002, has done Chevrah Kadisha work since 2001, and has been a Spiritual Care Volunteer with Kaiser Oakland since 2014. He is co-author (with Rabbi Stuart Kelman) of Chesed Shel Emet: The Truest Act of Kindness: Exploring the Meaning of Taharah, and (with Rabbi Kelman and Rabbi Jason Weiner) of Nichum Aveilim: A Guide for the Comforter.
