Deborah Ugoretz works in papercuts, painting, and small constructions. She was recognized by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts as a master cut-paper artist and for eight years, and was a co-coordinator of an Artist Beit Midrash—artists who study Jewish texts and create visual interpretations. She has been creating ketubot since the 1970’s. Her studio in Brooklyn is also a linchpin in the annual Redhook Open Studios event which she initiated and continues to guide in partnership with local artists.
Jim Mavrikios finds nothing incongruous about being a Greek-American Jewish Arabist—and program manager of New Lehrhaus. In 2001 he founded Pacific Arabic, a language school in downtown San Francisco. He served as executive director there until 2020, while also teaching Standard and Moroccan Arabic.
