"New Lehrhaus" in the News
We thought it would be useful to give everyone a recap on what's happened in the last two months to Lehrhaus. The J-weekly has covered it well.
First, there was the announcement of the closure of HaMaqom (formerly Lehrhaus Judaica). Have a look at the article here. You'll see a photo of our stalwart instructor, Jehon Grist, in the early days of both Lehrhaus and Jehon!
In response to a public outcry to save Lehrhaus, the J-weekly interviewed HaMaqom staff and was told that there was no chance of the Jewish adult school being revived. There is some interesting recent history given in their article here.
J-weekly readers wrote to the newspaper asking, "Can't HaMaqom/Lehrhaus be saved by the community?"
Among those distressed by the closure were Rachel and David Biale, long time teachers and active members of the Bay Area Jewish community. They threw on their super hero capes and determined to turn the tide. Fortunately the Biales are well known in the community and quickly gathered support. Want a feel good story? Here it is!
More letters to the J expanded on the feelings of past students and the efforts of the Biales. More feel good coverage here. In the Biales' letter to the J you can read the list of board members already onboard to help Lehrhaus make a full recovery.
