Contemporary Jewish Art: A Guide for the Perplexed (Begins Virtual, then In person)
- Pacific Time In-Person Program
In partnership with the Contemporary Jewish Museum
Contemporary art can offer us limitless opportunities to connect with the complex world we live in. But how does one start to uncover the many possible meanings behind an artwork? In this course, discover how art can help us interpret the world by exploring artworks by Jewish artists today who are looking to the many aspects of Jewish culture, identity, and community to explore connection.
Session 1: (Zoom)
A Guide for the Perplexed—In this online lecture, we will contextualize contemporary art within the world of art history and learn some tools to help view and engage with contemporary art.
Thursday,
September 12, 7–8:30pm, on Zoom
Session 2: (In Person)
In-person guided tour of the California Jewish Open
Using the tools we learned in the first session, we will explore a wide range of ideas from artists of diverse identities and generations presented in the exhibition. Together, we will try to answer the question: How are artists looking to the many aspects of Jewish culture, identity, and community to foster, reimagine, hold, or discover connection?
Sunday, September 15, 1:30–3pm, in-person at the CJM
Session 3: (In Person)
Identity, Connection, Art Workshop
In the final session, participants will return to The CJM and create a collaborative community art piece. Through a series of creative exercises, we will engage in the process of making art through dialogue, find connections to one another, and leave with a personal “Shanah – Tova” in celebration of the Jewish New Year.
Sunday, September 29, 1:30-3pm, in-person at the CJM
