Jehon Grist: Mexico and Its Jews in a Nutshell (Virtual on Zoom)

- Pacific Time Virtual Program

We will begin with an overview of the history of Mexico from the Olmec to Aztec pre-colonial cultures, through the Spanish occupation, and on to the birth and growth of the independent state. Along the way, we’ll discover how space archaeology is revealing dozens of ancient Mexican sites previously unknown; how Church and State have struggled for control under Spain and later independence; and Mexico’s complex relationship with the United States.

Building on this background, our second session will explore how Jews made their way to Mexico in the early 16th century, both suffering and prospering in an ever-changing social environment through the centuries. Finally, we’ll visit the modern Mexican Jewish community to assess its character and achievements.

Tour participants (see Study Tours) will have access to an expanded online version of this course that includes virtual visits to sites on the tour itinerary and a reading collection of chapters and articles as PDF files.
