How did the legal structure of white supremacy in the South become enfeebled, if not destroyed? Because of discrimination, black lawyers were too few to make a difference in the 1960s. Because of social stigma, local white lawyers very rarely wished to advance civil rights. Mostly Northern Jewish attorneys stepped in to fill this historic vacuum, and their contribution to the democratization of the region needs to be illuminated and appreciated.
