He survived an assassination attempt in Mozambique by the apartheid regime in 1989, losing his arm and suffering other grievous injuries. He is the author of, among other books, The Jail Diary of Albie Sachs, based on his time in solitary confinement in South Africa. He was a prime mover in the design of South Africa’s Constitutional Court and served as its chief justice, and was a key person in assembling an extraordinary art collection, which is an integral part of the building.
