Mission & Philosophy

Our Mission

New Lehrhaus brings students and teachers together in dynamic dialogue to explore Jewish sources, traditions, and arts, sustaining and enriching the vibrant spirit of Jewish civilization.

As the Bay Area's non-denominational lifelong Jewish learning institution, we are dedicated to academic excellence, open inquiry, contemporary relevance, and cultural and religious pluralism.

We embrace what Franz Rosenzweig, the original founder of the Lehrhaus (House of Study), called "new learning." He advanced an approach that begins wherever you are, with whatever knowledge and curiosity you bring, and moves from the periphery toward deeper understanding. In our community, historians learn alongside physicists, artists alongside engineers, newcomers alongside seasoned scholars, all contributing their unique perspectives to our shared exploration of Jewish thought and culture.

Our Approach to Learning

Rooted in the Bay Area

We are a product of the Bay Area's unique spirit of innovation, curiosity, and fearless inquiry. That dynamic energy shapes everything we do, infusing ancient wisdom with a modern, exploratory mindset. Our classrooms are hubs of the vibrant intellectual and cultural life that makes this region extraordinary.

Learning in Action

Learning happens through many pathways. We move beyond passive lectures to embrace active, experiential approaches: art-making, nature walks, study tours, music, and hands-on exploration. Whether you learn best through reading, doing, discussing, or creating, you'll find your way in our classrooms, both inside and out.

Brilliant & Passionate Teaching

We bring together outstanding teachers—top scholars, artists, and clergy—united by a commitment to intellectual rigor and transformative teaching. More than just experts, they are passionate guides who meet you where you are, sparking new insights and fostering a genuine love of learning in a dynamic, supportive environment.

Learning in Community

The best insights emerge from conversation. We build a vibrant community grounded in dialogue, drawing on the Jewish tradition of hevruta (paired study) to spark connection between learners. Here, you will find not just classes, but relationships—with peers, teachers, and partners throughout our Bay Area ecosystem.
