Emma Breslow recently graduated with a PhD in Linguistics from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, where she specialized in sociolinguistics and supporting minoritized, diasporic, or endangered languages. Her dissertation focuses on diverse pronunciations of and attitudes towards contemporary Yiddish, especially as spoken by people living in contexts where Yiddish is not the vernacular. She has also published work on Jewish English vocabulary in Australia and the United States, and varying meanings of the words shmooze and chutzpah, participated in a collaboration between scholars of diasporic languages including Armenian, Yiddish, Michif, Hawaiian, and Anishnaabemowin, and researched the botanical knowledge encoded in the names of plants in Woleaian, a language from Micronesia.
