Fred Astren
Fred Astren is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Jewish Studies at San Francisco State University, where he previously served as Department Chair. He holds a Ph.D. in Near Eastern Studies and an M.A. in Arabic from the University of California, Berkeley, and his research primarily focuses on the Mediterranean Middle Ages. His academic work explores minority and sectarian history, with a particular emphasis on Jewish history under Islam, Jewish-Muslim relations, and the Karaite Jewish sect. Dr. Astren is the author of Karaite Judaism and Historical Understanding (2004) and co-editor of Judaism and Islam: Boundaries, Interaction, and Communication (2000), and he continues to publish extensively on topics ranging from medieval Muslim conquests to the representations of minority religions in the Islamic world.
