Judith Hauptman
Judith Hauptman
Judith Hauptman is the E. Billi Ivry Professor (emerita) of Talmud and Rabbinic Culture at the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York. She is the author of four scholarly books and numerous articles. Her two main areas of inquiry are (1) how the disparate teachings of many rabbis, over many centuries, coalesced into the single text of the Talmud; and (2) how the rabbis of the Talmud viewed women, their role and legal status. That Jewish law changes over time in response to social and economic conditions is a theme that runs through many of her writings. In 2024 Judith moved to Berkeley CA and is now an active member of  Congregation Netivot Shalom.
