Join New Lehrhaus for an outing to Berkeley Repertory Theatre for Liberation, Bess Wohl’s acclaimed play about feminism, memory, and the unfinished work of social change. Set partly in 1970s Ohio, the play follows a group of women who gather in a recreation-center basement to imagine new possibilities for their lives. Decades later, one woman’s daughter returns to that history, revisiting the hopes, conflicts, and unanswered questions of the women’s liberation movement. The Berkeley Rep production, directed by Whitney White, comes to the Bay Area following an acclaimed Broadway run.

We’ll gather before the performance for a brief conversation to frame the play and its historical context, then reconvene afterward to reflect on what we’ve seen and discuss the questions the play raises about feminism, freedom, memory, and what one generation passes on to the next.
