Few Biblical characters have so captured the imagination over the millennia as King David: shepherd, musician, warrior, lover, king. Yet he was also ruthless, adulterous, opportunistic, and the head of family far more dysfunctional than any depicted in a modern soap opera.
But what is fact and what is fiction? Our class will explore the texts (both in Hebrew and English translation), recent archaeological discoveries, and opinions of ancient and modern commentators to discover the real David. We’ll also delve into David’s Movie Midrash: how the cinema has portrayed him over the last century, including his current hit streaming TV series.
