This course, Women as Guardians of Sephardic Culture, is an Educational Program offered by New Lehrhaus. It is scheduled for September 2, 2026. The session is held on a Wednesday from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm Pacific Time.

The total registration fee is $18.00. The course is conducted Online and focuses on the role of women in preserving Sephardic culture across the Diaspora, Crypto-Jewish history and Converso traditions, and Sephardic music, Ladino, and oral storytelling.

How did the songs and stories of Sephardic women become the primary vessel for Jewish survival across the Spanish diaspora? Following the 1492 expulsion, women took on a central role in preserving Sephardic culture, using oral traditions to transmit values and educate children in far-flung communities. In the thousands of "Converso" households that outwardly converted to Christianity while secretly practicing Judaism, the domestic sphere replaced the synagogue as the spiritual center. This shift saw women ascend to roles traditionally held by men—becoming the teachers, ritual slaughterers, and primary transmitters of tradition. Amado explores these hidden lives by sharing the legends and songs that reflect a unique blend of earthy secularism, loyalty, and a longing for Spain. She also examines the contemporary strains within these families as they re-embrace public synagogue life and navigate the shifting balance of authority between men and women.

Who this is for
  • Students of the Sephardic diaspora and the "Converso" experience who want to understand the secret preservation of Jewish identity.
  • Those interested in gender studies and how the displacement of religious life from the synagogue to the home transformed women's communal roles.
  • History and folklore enthusiasts eager to explore how Sephardic songs and storytelling serve as a living archive of love, tradition, and cultural survival.

What you'll leave with
  • A deep understanding of the "crypto-Jewish" household and the specific ways women took on leadership and ritual roles previously reserved for men.
  • Insight into the "earthy secularism" that characterizes Sephardic oral tradition and its universal themes of loyalty and longing.
  • A nuanced perspective on the modern tensions generated as families transition from domestic, female-led traditions back to public, male-led synagogue structures.
