Yiddish: Bodies in Motion
- Pacific Time In-Person Program
$200.00
Course Summary for Search and Accessibility
This course, Yiddish Movement: Of the Body!, is an Educational Program offered by New Lehrhaus. It is scheduled for nine sessions beginning October 19, 2026 and ending December 14, 2026. Sessions are held on Mondays from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM Pacific Time.
The total registration fee is $200.00. The course is conducted In-Person at the East Bay Jewish Campus in Oakland and focuses on embodied and movement-based Yiddish learning, Yiddish texts and media on sports and exercise, and intermediate Yiddish reading, listening, and conversation.
This intermediate, in-person Yiddish course uses physical movement, conversation, texts, and media to explore how Yiddish describes bodies in motion and talks about sports, exercise, and physical activity. The course is conducted entirely in Yiddish and assumes proficiency with the alef-beys. There will be some physical movement during class, but it's a course for every kind of body.

About the Teacher
Sara Feldman is an experienced Yiddish language teacher who has taught at Harvard and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and holds a Ph.D. in Near Eastern Studies from the University of Michigan. Her approach is grounded in language pedagogy: the goal is not simply to decode texts or learn about Yiddish, but to develop real ability to speak, understand, read, and write it. She treats Yiddish as a living, evolving language rather than a subject to memorize. Her own work, from a queer Yiddish curriculum project to research on Yiddish's entanglement with Russian and Hebrew in modern Jewish culture, reflects that same instinct to treat the language as something still very much in motion.
Nine Mondays: October 19, 26; November 2, 9, 16, 23, 30; December 7, 14, 5:30–7pm Pacific Time
