Course Summary for Search and Accessibility
This course, Jewish Stories from Argentina: From the Pampas to the Plaza de Mayo, is an Educational Program offered by New Lehrhaus. It is scheduled to begin on 7/2/2026 and conclude on 8/6/2026. The sessions are held weekly on Thursdays from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm Pacific Time.
The total registration fee is $108.00. The course is conducted Online via Zoom and focuses on the history of Jewish life in Argentina, Latin American Jewish literature and culture, Jewish migration from Eastern Europe to the pampas and Moisés Ville, the Sephardic experience in Argentina, the Argentine military dictatorship, the Madres de Plaza de Mayo, and political violence, and contemporary Jewish life in Buenos Aires.
How have Jewish-Argentine writers, working across fiction, memoir, and investigative reportage, traced a century of migration, urban settlement, and reinvention? This course explores the history of Jewish Argentina through a selection of essential texts that document a remarkable cultural evolution. We begin with the foundational fiction of Alberto Gerchunoff's The Jewish Gauchos, which traces the migration from the pampas to the city, before turning to a series of compelling non-fiction works. Javier Sinay's The Crimes of Moisés Ville investigates the darker history of the early Jewish settlements, while Jordan Salama's Stranger in the Desert explores the Sephardic experience in the Argentine interior. Iossi, the Remorseful Spy carries us into the political upheaval of the military dictatorship and the era of the Madres de Plaza de Mayo, before Tamara Tenenbaum's The End of Love brings us to contemporary life in the Once neighborhood of Buenos Aires. Together, these texts offer a broad view of Jewish-Argentine politics, culture, and migration.
