Course Summary for Search and Accessibility

This course, Beyond Binary: Gender and Sexuality in the Talmud, is an Educational Program offered by New Lehrhaus. It is scheduled to begin on August 6, 2026 and conclude on August 13, 2026. The sessions are held weekly on Thursdays from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm Pacific Time.

The total registration fee is $36.00. The course is conducted Online via Zoom and focuses on non-binary gender categories in the Talmud, Jewish law and gender identity, and rabbinic tradition and contemporary debates about sexuality and the law.

Most people know that Jewish law draws a sharp distinction between men and women. What fewer people know is that the Talmud itself recognizes human beings who fit neither category. Centuries before modern debates about gender identity, rabbinic tradition developed sophisticated legal frameworks for individuals who were "androginos" (dually sexed) or "tumtum" (of indeterminate sex), grappling seriously with questions of status, obligation, and exemption that feel remarkably contemporary.

This course explores those talmudic texts closely, examining how the rabbis thought about gender, embodiment, and law, and what their frameworks might offer to our own moment of intense legal and cultural debate about gender and sexuality in the United States.

Who this is for
  • Anyone curious about gender and sexuality in Jewish tradition who wants to go beyond surface-level familiarity.
  • Students of Talmud, Jewish law, or gender studies looking for a rigorous, text-based exploration of non-binary categories in Jewish thought.
  • Anyone following contemporary legal debates about gender identity who wants a deeper historical and religious perspective.
  • Learners who enjoyed New Lehrhaus's previous programs on gender and sexuality in rabbinic texts.

What you'll leave with
  • A close familiarity with key talmudic texts on non-binary gender categories, including androginos and tumtum.
  • An understanding of how Jewish legal tradition has historically navigated gender beyond the binary.
  • Tools for thinking about the relationship between ancient rabbinic frameworks and contemporary debates about gender and the law.
  • A richer sense of the Talmud as a living, relevant text with something to say about the most pressing questions of our time.
