SESSION 1: Jhos Singer—Judaism in a Bottle: The Manischewitz Story (Zoom only)

Sunday, April 9 @ 3–4:30pm

American wine-making history, immigration trends of the late 19th Century, and the rise and fall of Prohibition meet in the origin story of the most unique American wine ever produced - Manischewitz. How did it come to define Kosher wine and, in some ways, Jewish identity, in the 20th century?

SESSION 2: Picnic & Charoset Competent: CANCELED

SESSION 3: Barbara Kirshenblatt-Gimblett: People of the Cookbook, in conversation with Yael Raviv of Jewish Food Society (Zoom only)

We've come a long way from the 18th-century kosher gourmet cookbook in German to the Jewish Food Society's (JFS) online archive. This conversation will draw on gems from Barbara's collection of over 1200 cookbooks and the JFS' y archive of family stories cum recipes.

SESSION 4: Jesse Yurow—Cook Across the Centuries: Recipes from Historical Cookbooks  (In Person or on Zoom)

Cook with friends - a delicious meal of dishes from Jewish cookbooks discussed in Barbara Kirshenblatt-Gimblett’s presentation the prior week, People of the Cookbook (adapted to be vegetarian).

SESSION 5: Prof. Ariel Mayse & Debbie Harris—A Land of Milk and Honey  (In Person or on Zoom) Sunday, June 4 @ 3–4:30pm

Savoring the gift of "A land of milk and honey," we will examine traditional Jewish teachings on the relationship between humans and animals, exploring our ethical obligations to the animals whose gifts sustain us. Hands-on cheese-making: milk courtesy of Urban Adamah’s mama-goats.

SESSION 6: Aliza Grayevsky Somekh—Breads of the Jews  (In Person or on Zoom)

Wheat pancakes, matzah, challah, bagels, rye and pumpernickel bread, and pita are all breads associated with Jewish life and culture. After a bird’s-eye view of Jewish breads, bake some samples in Urban Adamah's kitchen.
